Fresco depicting the Polish delegation in the Vatican Museums

The Gallery of Candelabra (Galleria dei Candelabri) in the Vatican Museums contains frescoes depicting the most important events of Leo XIII's pontificate. One shows the events of 16 December 1883, when a Polish delegation presented the Pope with the painting 'Jan Sobieski at Vienna'. It depicts Leo XIII sitting on a throne surrounded by cardinals, probably including Primate Mieczyslaw Ledóchowski. Opposite the Pope is Count Stanisław Tarnowski. Behind him, kneeling Polish noblemen are shown. On the side, under Tarnowski's raised hand, is Jan Matejko depicted. The author of the fresco is Ludwig Seitz - an Italian painter of German origin, for many years director of the Vatican Galleries.
