According to reports, the burial place of soldiers killed during the 1919 battle against the Bolsheviks was chosen near the grave of 4 January insurgents. In 1929, a Roman Catholic church was erected on these graves. At the entrance to the church a plaque was unveiled with its consecration on 3.11.1929 with the inscription: "To Polish soldiers who died fighting for their native lands". This text provoked protests from Latvians, who saw it as a Polish claim to the Illukistan district, which led to the plaque being painted over. Today there is no trace of it. Next to the church, in 1997 the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites erected a two-metre-high reinforced concrete legion cross, modelled on the crosses placed on the graves of soldiers killed in the Polish-Bolshevik war. It stands on a low foundation, around which a narrow strip of paving stones has been laid. A black stone plaque with an inscription in Polish and Latvian is placed on the cross, at the crossing of the arms: "The grave of Polish soldiers killed in 1919-1920 for the independence of Latvia". The monument was renovated in 2019 by the Foundation Aid to Poles in the East as part of a task co-financed by the Programme of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage "Sites of National Remembrance Abroad".
