Plaque commemorating Nicolaus Copernicus in Ferrara

Nicolaus Copernicus came to Ferrara because of the lower cost of living and study than in Padua and Bologna. Ferrara was an important scientific and cultural centre attracting students from all over Europe. A plaque on the Archbishop's palace reads: 'in this palace on 31 May 1503 the great Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, pride of the University of Ferrara, graduated in canon law'. The plaque was erected on the 500th anniversary of Copernicus' birth.
