Biography:

Maria Konopnicka (1842-1910), born in Suwałki, daughter of Józef Wasiłowski (coat-of-arms Ślepowron) and Scholastka, née Turska (coat-of-arms Dołęga). She lived for eight years with her husband, Jarosław Konopnicki, whom she married in 1862. The couple had eight children together. Konopnicka, possessed of passion and literary talents, could not bear the restrictions imposed by her husband. The couple separated, and Maria supported the family on her own from her writing and tutoring. During a certain period of her life, she travelled extensively in Europe and devoted a lot of time to self-development. At the latest in 1886, she met Maria Dulębianka, her long-time partner and friend. Konopnicka was the author of numerous poems and novellas; she also edited the women's magazine "Świt" and was a literary critic. She died of pneumonia.
