Czesław Niemen, or actually Czesław Juliusz Wydrzycki, was born on 16 February 1939 in Stare Wasiliszki in the Grodno region, lands that were then on Polish territory. The Wydrzycki family lived in a small house surrounded by a garden, located on the edge of the village, until 1958. They left for Poland as part of the last wave of post-war expatriation of Poles from the former eastern lands of the Republic.

Museum in Stare Vassiliszki
. The Czesław Niemen Museum was established in 2011, mainly thanks to the enthusiasm of fans of his works, of which there is no shortage in Belarus. The museum is located in the artist's family house, built a century ago by his grandfather Jakub for his sons, Antoni and Wiktor.

Czesław Niemen was the son of Anna née Markowska and Antoni Wydrzycki. The artist's father was remembered in Stare Wasiliszki as a skilled craftsman who could also tune a piano and organ or repair a clock.

An extremely original singer, composer, multi-instrumentalist and lyricist, Czesław Niemen is undoubtedly one of the most recognisable creators of Polish music in the 20th century. He began by performing in a school and church choir in his hometown, learning to play the bajan (a type of accordion) and the organ, and attended a music school in Grodno, from which he was expelled for truancy. Apparently, he preferred to spend his time on the Neman embankment.

The collection of the museum in Staré Vassilišky is mainly connected with the stage of the artist's life spent in the Grodno region. Not much original memorabilia has been preserved on the site - just a few household utensils and furnishings, but the museum creators tried to furnish the interior as a typical provincial house looked in the 1940s-50s. The story about the life of Niemen and his family is accompanied by reproductions of photographs, documents and correspondence, album covers, as well as posters from the artist's later performances in the Soviet Union and, of course, the musician. The story of Czesław Niemen's first love and later married first wife, Maria Klauzunik from Stare Wasiliszki in Grodno, who moved to Poland with him, is recalled. A curiosity is the school notebooks, drawings and notes of the artist discovered two years ago in the attic of the house, as well as badly damaged photographs and negatives, probably taken by Niemen himself, who had a passion for photography in his early youth.
