Quarry in the cemetery next to the church of Polish Army soldiers killed in the Polish-Bolshevik war

Soldiers of the 1st and 3rd Infantry Divisions of the Legions, who took part in the liberation of Dyneburg on their way to the north-east, are buried in the cemetery next to the church in Dukszty Stary. Soldiers of these divisions who died in this area in September and December 1919 also rest here. The cemetery holds the ashes of more than 100 legionaries. After the Second World War, the necropolis was almost completely destroyed. About. 2000, the Union of Poles in Lithuania, with financial support from the Council for the Protection of Remembrance of Combat and Martyrdom, began rescue work on this necropolis. Thanks to the efforts of the Union of Poles in Lithuania, a monument was unveiled on 10.11.2007, dedicated to Polish soldiers killed in the battle against the Bolsheviks in 1920. It is a tall black metal cross, at its foot there is a large black plaque with an engraved cross, an image of Our Lady of the Dawn Gate and the Polish emblem; the inscription on the plaque (in Polish and Lithuanian) reads: "To the Polish Army soldiers who died in the battle against Bolshevism for the Independent Republic of Poland in 1920 in Dukszty / Honour their memory / In tribute to the Union of Poles in Lithuania A.D. 2007". Below this is a second inscription, in Polish only: "Bogarodzica Dziewica! Bring the blood of the free people before God's throne".The monument is surrounded by a low fence made of metal bars.In 2013-2015, ZPL continued the restoration of the graves with funds from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland through the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Vilnius. Further restoration work, consisting of granite replicas of damaged gravestones, was carried out in 2017-2018 by the foundation Aid to Poles in the East. Currently, there are approximately 95 rebuilt tombstones.
