War quarters of Polish soldiers killed between 1919-1921

Troki | Lithuania
lit. Trakai; dawna nazwa: Nowe Troki
As a result of a two-day military action on 8-9.10.1920, General Żeligowski's army captured Vilnius. Having seized Vilnius, these troops sought to drive the Lithuanians as far away from the city as possible. During the first days of fighting - until 15-16.10.1920. The Poles took, among others, Landvaras, Trakai and Rykonty on the left bank of the Vilnia River, while on the opposite bank of the river - Reichsbad and Nemunas.Soldiers killed in these battles were buried in the war quarters in the Trakai cemetery. In the 1930s, in accordance with the plan for the commemoration, soldiers from the following cemeteries were transferred to the cemetery in Novi Trakai: Khazbiyevichy, Goralishki, Klepachy, Landvar, Leipuny, Ludviniv, Olkieniki, Olsoki, Sejmiy, Olkieniki Station, Old Trakai, Ulkiški, Vikhtalanka, Vytvo. The site has been preserved to the present day; over time it has been devastated and new burials have been made there. In 2000. The Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites renovated the cemetery and built a central commemoration. In 2011. The OPWiM Council funded further renovation work on the quarter. The quarter is located near the main cemetery gate. The graves (95 in number), currently unnamed, are arranged regularly in four rows. In the corner of the cemetery plot, right at the entrance, a cross stood on a pedestal with the national emblem. On either side of the cross were plaques with general Polish and Lithuanian text and two plaques with the names of soldiers. The inscription on the monument states: "HERE REST THE SOLDIERS OF THE POLISH ARMY WHO FOUGHT AND DIED IN 1919-1920 IN THE VICINITY OF TROK HONOUR THEIR MEMORY. Government of the Republic of Poland" / "ČIA ILSISI LENKIJOS KARIUOMENES KARIAI 1919 -1920 METAISKOVOJĘ IR ŽUVĘ TRAKU APYLINKESE GARBE JU ATMINIMUI Lenkijos Respublikos Vyriausybe "The quarters are fenced, at the entrance there is a plaque with an inscription in Polish and Lithuanian: "POLSKA KWATERA WOJENNA 1919-1920" / "LENKU KARIUKAPAVIETE1919-1920".General renovation of the quarters was carried out in 2020 by the Foundation Aid to Poles in the East as part of a task subsidised by the programme of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage "Sites of National Remembrance Abroad". Due to the considerable deterioration of the tombstone material, granite replicas were made.
