The grave site of Polish refugees from 1939 in the local Catholic cemetery

Krajowa housed a camp for Polish soldiers interned at the beginning of the Second World War. The first military refugees were located in the "Palace" hotel. In October 1939, the number of internees was: 62 junior officers and 1,200 soldiers. Krajowa was also the place of internment of President Ignacy Mościcki, members of the Polish government and initially also Marshal Edward Rydz-Śmigły. The town was also the most numerous concentration of civilian refugees from Poland in 1940. The names of 34 Poles buried in this cemetery are known - 2 officers, 7 non-commissioned officers, 1 reserve captain and civilians. They now rest in an architecturally coherent quarters. In 1996, from the fund of the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Remembrance, renovation and cleaning works were carried out in the cemetery section. Soon, however, the plot was demolished - an unknown perpetrator destroyed all the crosses, with only the pedestals remaining. In 2013. The OPWiM Council decided to rebuild the quarters. Small granite headstones were made with the relief of the cross and engraved data of those buried. Six graves remained unnamed, as it was not possible to determine who rests in them. The surface of the grave fields and the area between them was filled in with decorative grit. A granite monument with an image of the coat of arms of the Republic and inscriptions in Polish and Romanian was erected at the front. The inscription in Polish reads: "POLSKIM UCHODOROSCOM / FROM THE YEARS OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR / SPOCZYLACYCYM / ON THE CEMETERY / OF THE FRIENDLY ROMAN LAND / OJCZYZNA". The monument replaced a plaque with this content placed in the quarters in 1994 to mark the 55th anniversary of the refugees' arrival in Romania.
