In January/February 1942, the redeployment of the Polish Armed Forces in the USSR (General Anders' Army) from the Soviet Russian republics to the Central Asian republics took place. Units of the 6th Infantry Division and the Army Organisation Centre were located in the then Kashkadarya region. There was also a massive influx of civilians to the places of formation of Polish units following the decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR on 12.08.1941 on the so-called "amnesty for Polish citizens." At least 15 soldiers died from illness and exhaustion in Jakkabag in February-August 1942 (this is how many names we were able to establish).The Polish War Cemetery in Jakkabag is located in the centre of the town. It survived the Soviet era as a grass-covered area with small irregular hills, fenced with a crumbling wooden fence. In 1998, the site was fenced and tidied up by the authorities of the Kashkadarya region, and a brick-built concrete monument with a plaque inscribed in Uzbek and English was placed in the central part: "The memory of Polish friends will always remain in the hearts of Yakkabag residents". A brick fence with metal elements was made, into which small crosses were incorporated; they were also inserted into the wings of the decorative gate.As part of the works carried out by the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Remembrance in 2001, a central monument - a milepost topped with an eagle bas-relief - was erected in the cemetery, on the axis of the entrance. On both sides of the access to the monument, 16 tombstones with the relief of a cross and name plates were arranged in four rows.The inscription on the monument in Polish and Uzbek reads: "TU SPOCZYWAJĄ POLACY / 16 SOLDIERS / OF THE POLISH ARMY / GEN. WŁ. ANDERS / AND CIVILIANS / FORMER PRISONERS / OF THE SOVIET GULAGS / WHO DIED IN 1942. / on the way to their homeland / in honour of their memory".At the entrance to the cemetery there are information plates with an inscription in Polish and Uzbek: "POLISH / WAR CEMETERY / JAKKABAK / FOUNDED BY / THE REPUBLIC OF POLAND / BY THE EFFORT OF THE COUNCIL / FOR THE PROTECTION OF MEMORIES / OF WARS AND MURDER / THAT ALSO CARES / FOR IT".The existing monument has been moved to a place by the gate.The cemetery has an area of 420 m2. It is under permanent care, funded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
