Cemetery in Warž

Waręż | Ukraine
ukr. Wariaż (Варяж)
This necropolis is located on the eastern outskirts of the town of Waręż, on a small wooded hill. It was established in the second quarter of the 19th century, which can be deduced from the dates on the surviving tombstones. The oldest inscriptions are on the tombstones: Kajetan Osmólski (d. 1838), in the form of a small obelisk decorated with a relief depicting an owl, and Anastasia Litkowicz (d. 1848). These in Polish appear near the entrance, in a neglected and overgrown part of the cemetery, on either side of the path leading through the scrub.

According to Hauser, there are several interesting monuments in the cemetery. He considered the (now unnamed) stately monument with a sculpture of a woman leaning against rocks, decorated with torches of life, panoplies and the crowned Swan coat of arms, located to the left of the aforementioned path, to be the most interesting. Hauser also mentions the monuments behind it, deep in the scrub: Michał Pobóg Bromirski (d. 1868), surmounted by a cross entwined with drapery; Rev. Michał Mircz-Mroczkowski (d. 1875), decorated with an acroterion and a high stone cross, or Aleksander Tchórzewski (d. 1889) in the form of moulded rocks surmounted by a stone cross.

Hauser's attention is also drawn to the imposing monument on the grave of Leon Jan Kanty Ślepowron Kuczyński (d. 1887), decorated with a bas-relief of a woman floating and scattering roses with a palm branch in her hand, bearing the Ślepowron coat of arms. It was thus once a 'nobleman's' cemetery.

Hauser furthermore learned from the inhabitants of Waręż that there was another cemetery - a "Polish" one - near the border itself. He made no attempt to reach it, although it is easily accessible even to the townspeople themselves.

On the website of the Polonica Institute, there is information about a project (carried out from 27 July, then 8-12 September and 13-17 October) to clean up the area of the cemetery and the surroundings of St Mark's Church in Waresz.
