Symbolic tomb of Tadeusz Kościuszko on the road from Fontainebleau to Montigny-sur-Loing

Variants of the name:
Monument commémoratif de Tadeusz Kosciuszko à Montigny-sur-Loing

The symbolic tomb of Tadeusz Kościuszko on the road from Fontainebleau to Montigny-sur-Loing was built on the initiative of Franciszek Zeltner, Kościuszko's adjutant at the Congress of Vienna, to commemorate the Polish general's almost fifteen-year stay in Berville. The chapel was built between 1834 and 1835 with money from the inhabitants of La Genevraye and Montigny-sur-Loing. The structure, similar to the Kosciuszko Mound in Krakow, was to be sprinkled with earth. However, this plan and the celebrations associated with it in 1837-1838 were interrupted by the Russian government. The chapel deteriorated until it was restored in 1924 with the foundation of Count Orlowski. A neoclassical portal designed by Lucas of Fontainebleau was also built. Restoration work took place again between 1955 and 1956. In 1993, the site was included on the Supplementary List of Historic Monuments in France (Liste Supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques).
