Biography:

Jan Karski (1914-2000), born in Lodz, son of Stefan Kozielewski and Walentyna Burawska. He studied law and diplomacy at the Jan Kazimierz University in Lwów. He also studied at the School of Horse Artillery Cadets in Włodzimierz Wołyński. In 1939, he was employed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He took part in the September campaign as an officer of the 5th division of horse artillery. In the same year, he was taken prisoner. He was held in a gulag in Kozelshchin near Poltava. He escaped from it in December 1939. In Warsaw, he became active in the underground. He reported on the crimes committed by the Germans against the Jews. One of his reports, called "Raportek Karskiego", was handed over by Władysław Sikorski to the governments of England and the USA. In 1943, he met with Franklin Delano Roosevelt and conveyed to him the demands of Jewish leaders for the rescue of the Jews. After the war, he worked at Georgtown University, in Washington, DC. There he earned a doctorate and later a professor of political science. He received many decorations for his heroic actions during the war.
