The Romanesque church of St Martin in Bessay-sur-Allier dates from the 11th/17th century. In the lintel of its portal is a relief depicting the Paschal Lamb being attacked by two wolves. According to local tradition, the bas-relief was intended by Duke Vytautas Adam Czartoryski, who owned the nearby Chaugy estate in the mid-19th century, to depict Poland being persecuted by Russia and Prussia.
