Biography:

Julian Stańczak (1928-2017), born in Borownia. In 1940 he was arrested by the NKVD and sent to Siberia. There, subjected to hard labour, he lost feeling in his right hand. He and his family escaped from Russia and travelled to Africa. There, Stanczak began his artistic education. The first exhibition of his work took place in Nairobia. The Stanczak family then emigrated to the United Kingdom and, after a year, to the United States of America. There, Julian Stanczak undertook his studies at the Cleveland Art Institute and Yale University. Stanczak created paintings in the op-art style. He was one of the pioneers of this phenomenon in art. His works are in numerous American collections. From 1957 to 1964, he worked as a professor (teaching painting) at the Art Academy of Cincinnati. From 1964 to 1995, he held this role at the Cleveland Institute of Art. Juliań Stańczak remains one of the most important artists of Polish origin in American art. His creative invention, sense of colour and great talent, still await full recognition and scholarly study in Poland.
