Plaque commemorating Zbigniew Herbert in Siena

Zbigniew Herbert liked to travel in Europe and visited Italy, among other places. He returned to Siena many times, staying at the Hotel Tre Donzelle. This place was the inspiration for the essay 'Siena' from the volume 'Barbarian in the Garden'. Zbigniew Herbert wrote: "I return to the Three Maidens (Hotel Tre Donzelle). I have an overwhelming urge to wake up the maid and tell her that I am leaving tomorrow and that it was good for me here. If I were not afraid of the word, I would say that I was happy'.
On the tenth anniversary of the death of the Polish essayist and poet, in June 2008, a commemorative plaque was placed on the façade of the Hotel Tre Donzelle.
