Biography:

Louis Marcoussis, born in Warsaw, son of carpet manufacturers, graphic artist and painter, one of the leading representatives of Cubism. From 1901, he studied for two years at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków under the guidance of Józef Mehoffer and Jan Stanisławski. In 1903, he moved to Paris. There he continued his studies at the Académie Julian under Jules Lefebvre. Through his acquaintance with Pablo Picasso, he became interested in Cubism. In 1912, Markus changed his name to Marcoussis, the name of a sub-par Parisian town. During the First World War, he served in the Foreign Legion.
