Biography:

Józef Hecht (1891-1951), born in Łódź, painter, sculptor and graphic artist. Between 1909 and 1914, he studied painting under Wojciech Weiss and printmaking under Józef Pankiewicz at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. After completing his studies, he travelled around Europe. In 1920, he settled in Paris. In 1927, together with Stanley William Hayter, he opened Atelier 17 (Studio 17), which was liked by many famous artists including: Pablo Picasso, Jian Miro, Alberto Giacometti, Max Ernst or Wassily Kandinsky. His work was awarded two gold medals at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1937. He died of a heart attack in his studio in Paris.
