In the Helsingborg municipal cemetery there is a mass grave of forty prisoners of German concentration camps who were evacuated from Germany as part of the Swedish Red Cross relief effort in 1945. The effort was initiated and organised by Count Folke Bernadotte, vice-chairman of the Swedish Red Cross, and was colloquially known as the 'White Buses'. - comes from the colour of the vehicles used to transport the evacuees. On arrival in Sweden, the evacuees were sent for treatment or convalescence, but despite care, some of them died of exhaustion and acquired diseases. The deceased were commemorated with a cross with the inscription 'To the Poles from the concentration camps Poles from Helsingborg 1945-1946' and a plaque with the names of those buried funded on the 25th anniversary of their death by the Council for the Protection of Monuments to Struggle and Martyrdom.
