Biography:

Adam Stefan Sapieha (1867-1951), born in Krasiczyn, son of Adam Stanisław Sapieha and Jadwiga née Sanguszka. He studied law at the University of Vienna, the Jagiellonian University and the University of Warsaw. He was a student at the Catholic Institute in Lille. He also studied theology at the University of Innsbruck. He graduated in this field at the University of Lviv in 1893. In the same year he was ordained deacon. At the end of the 19th century, he undertook diplomatic studies at the Church Noble Academy. In 1906 he became a chamberlain of Pius X. In 1911 he became diocesan bishop of the diocese of Cracow. In 1925 he became archbishop metropolitan of Krakow. In 1946 he was appointed cardinal. In the same year he ordained Karol Wojtyla as a priest.
