Biography:

Aleksander Żyw (1905-1995), born in Lida, son of Yakov and Leah Żyw, painter. He studied at the Warsaw School of Fine Arts under Tadeusz Pruszkowski. In 1934, he won a scholarship which enabled him to travel around Europe; he covered much of the route on foot. He then settled in Paris, where he opened his own art studio. During the Second World War he served as a war artist in the Polish armed forces, participating in the liberation of France in 1944. After the war, he settled in Scotland and moved to Tuscany with his wife in 1970. His long artistic career, spanning seven decades, included numerous exhibitions in various European cities such as Warsaw, Paris, Edinburgh, London and Milan. His works are in many collections, both private and public, including Tate Britain.
