Cemetery in Łowczyce

Cemetery with Polish gravestone monuments. Information about the cemetery has been published (see bibliography). According to Anna Lewkowska, Jacek Lewkowski and Wojciech Walczak, there is a Tatar cemetery in Łowczyce, located in the eastern part of the village. It has a rectangular plan, 0.30 ha in area and a metal fence. The cemetery was established before the second half of the 18th century. The oldest preserved tombstone dates back to 1814 and has the form of a granite boulder. The inscription reads: 'ANNA UŁANOWA 1814 / XBRA 25'. Also buried here are Major General Matveyevich Savelyevich (d. 1900) and the rotary commander of the Russian army, Joseph Harymaev (d. 1841). There is a ruined wooden mosque, built in the 2nd half of the 18th century. The aforementioned authors cite the words of A. Kołodziejczyk, who wrote in his work "Muslim cemeteries" that "Tatars in the Republic attributed miracle-working properties to some cemeteries." Instead of making pilgrimages to Mecca, they went to their places of worship, including the cemeteries in Łowczyce and Sieniawka.
