Biography:

Edward Jan Römer (1806-1878), born in Vilnius, son of Michael Joseph Römer, social activist, writer, translator and painter. He studied painting with Jan Rustem, at Vilnius University. During the November Uprising, he was associated with the Central Vilnius Insurgent Committee. In 1833, he was sentenced to life exile to Vologda, but was allowed to return after just one year. In 1838 he was again sentenced to exile to Vologda because of his connections with Szymon Konarski. He remained in exile until 1852. Upon his return to Vilnius, he became director of the second branch of the Benevolent Society. During the January Uprising he was under house arrest.
