Biography:

Estera Karp (Esther Carp) (1897-1970) was a Polish-Jewish painter and printmaker active in Poland, Austria, Germany and France. In the interwar period she was a member of the Jung Jidysz group. She was educated at an art school in Vienna, Berlin. From 1925 she lived intermittently in Paris. During the Second World War she was hospitalised for anxiety, probably preceded by the death of her beloved and the loss of a child. After the war, she returned to artistic life and exhibited regularly at Parisian salons: Independent, Autumn and Toulouse. She struggled with recurrent relapses. Her art betrayed the influence of Impressionism, Expressionism, the work of Paul Cézanne, Orfism Fauvism and Surrealism.
