Graves of two interned Polish soldiers of the 2nd Infantry Rifle Division

The 2nd Infantry Rifle Division, which took part in the fighting in France in 1940, was ordered to withdraw to Switzerland after running out of ammunition. On the night of 19-20 June 1940, the division's soldiers, numbering around 13,000, crossed the Swiss border. They were interned by the Swiss authorities and stayed in Switzerland until the end of the war. They were employed in the construction of roads, bridges, agricultural and land reclamation work. One of the two Polish soldiers buried in the cemetery in Tramelan - rifleman Piotr Szczepaniak - had already died on 20.06.1940. The grave of the second soldier - fireman Adam Józef Gawlik, who died on 19.08.1943 - is known to have been liquidated in 1998 during cleaning work in the cemetery. However, as a result of the intervention of the Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Remembrance notified by the relatives of this soldier, the preserved tombstone has been re-erected. Both tombstones are in the form of vertical slabs and bear inscription plaques and divisional eagles.
