The Basilica of the Immaculate Conception in Washington is one of the most important pilgrimage centres of the Catholic Church in the USA. At 2360 m2 , it is also one of the largest churches not only in the USA, but in the Americas. It does not lack Polish accents. The most important is the wall painting and mosaic "Christ Pantocrator" by Jan Henryk Rosen in the apse of the nave. This Warsaw-born, French-raised artist, who made his debut in 1923 at Warsaw's Zachęta Gallery, resided in the USA from 1937, where he left behind numerous works, most of which can be found in churches. Washington also has another of his works in the National Cathedral. Among the Polish monuments in the basilica, a special place is given to the Polish chapel (1964) dedicated to Our Lady of Czestochowa. It houses, among others, a copy of the painting of Our Lady of Czestochowa, the tapestries depicting the baptism of Mieszko I and the proclamation of Mary as Queen of Poland by King Jan Kazimierz in 1956.
