Biography:

Irena Lorentowicz (1908-1985), Polish painter, stage designer and educator. In 1931 she graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, and in 1935 she graduated in stage design from the Faculty of Directing Arts at the PIST in Warsaw. In 1936, she was awarded first prize in the Grand l'Opera competition for her set design for Karol Szymanowski's Harnasie at the Paris Opera. Following this success, she remained in Paris. Between 1941 and 1959, she moved to the United States, where she worked with, among others, the Metropolitan Opera; her paintings, frescoes, stained glass and sculptures also became popular. In 1960, she returned to Poland. In addition to her work on stage designs and painting, she also began to teach at the High School of Theatre Technology in Warsaw. In 1972, she published her memoirs Oczarowania .
