She studied at the Faculty of Interior Design of the State Higher School of Fine Arts in Gdańsk (now the Academy of Fine Arts). She obtained her diploma in 2012 from Dr Beata Szymańska. She continued her education at the Ontario College of Art and Design (OCAD) from 1988 to 1990, specialising in Environmental Design. She worked in Thornhill/k.Toronto, being active in the neighbourhood community, e.g. at the Art Club - she ran after-school art classes for primary schools students, was involved in decorating the school for special concerts, and did set designs for school musicals. She shared her passion for art and drawing with OCAD students between 2007 and 2010, teaching them the conceptual thinking process in design.

The artist is inspired by nature, tradition and people who have played an important role in her life. She paints portraits as well as abstraction, combining traditional techniques and digital media. Iwona Kmieć treats art as a method of communication with the world, inner expression and self-therapy. According to the artist, a series of digital graphics called 'Fairies' is a graphic transposition of the moods associated with observing nature. Each 'fairy' has its own interpretation, comes from experience and admiration of natural phenomena, and is deeply rooted in ecological consciousness. The artist creates her 'fairies' by drawing with her finger on an iphone screen. She is also fascinated by ink drawing - on a background painted with her eyes closed, the artist creates a drawing according to a preconceived idea, completing the project with random expression.

Iwona Kmieć's works can be found in private collections in the United States, Canada, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Poland.
