Biography:

Jan Chrzciciel Komarzewski (1747-1810), son of Mikołaj Komarzewski, general, mineralogist, member of the Society of Friends of Science, close associate of King Stanisław August Poniatowski.

His mother, according to Adam Moszczenski, was a poor noblewoman from Podolia. Details of his early life are unknown. In the Stanislaus times, he served as head of the military chancellery of King Stanislaus Augustus. After the partition of Poland, he left his homeland and settled in Paris, where he devoted himself to scientific work and mineralogical and geological research.

Komarzewski had a rich mineralogical and numismatic collection and a large library. He was the author of an invention - an instrument for taking underground measurements, which had applications in mining. He published the results of his work in the work 'Mémoire sur un graphomètre souterrain destiné à remplacer la boussole dans les mines' (1803).

The general was a close associate of King Stanislaus Augustus, both as head of the military chancellery and after he left Poland, when he continued to send important information to the king.

He died on 1 February 1810 in Paris in his flat at 54 rue des Petits Champs. At the time of his death, he was 63 years old, unmarried and childless (AdP, Tables de successions (DQ8), Paris 8e). His burial took place on 4 February 1810. He was buried in the Peupliers avenue at Père-Lachaise cemetery in perpetual concession No. 350 of 2 m², purchased by Jules Paul Benjamin Delessert, a well-known French banker and co-founder of the Caisse d'Épargne et de Prévoyance de Paris. The resting place is in section L, under number 232 of the cemetery plan.
