Jan Kwapiński (1885-1964), actually Piotr Edmund Chałupka. He graduated from a factory school in Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, then found employment in the sheet metal rolling mill of the Ostrowiec Machine Building Works. In 1901, he joined the Polish Socialist Party. In 1905, he joined the PPS Fighting Organisation. In 1906, he commanded a bomb attack, and was captured a year later. He was sent to prisons in Będzin and Piotrków. In 1907, he was transferred to the Warsaw Citadel. He was imprisoned until 1917, when he regained his freedom as a result of an amnesty. He was politically and unionistically active in the PPS. He took part in the Polish-Soviet War. He was a PPS member of parliament from 1922 to 1930. When World War II broke out, he was in Warsaw organising aid to the civilian population. In 1940, he was arrested by the NKVD, then exiled to Yakutia, later transferred to Aldan. He was released in 1941. In 1942 he was already in London, where he continued his activities within the PPS.
