Biography:

Jan Jerzy Plersch (1704/1705-1774), a Polish sculptor of German origin, was one of the leading artists of 18th century Warsaw sculpture. His works show the influence of the so-called Lviv School.

His most important works include the portal sarcophagus of Jan Tarło in Warsaw (reconstructed in 2010), the group of the Marriage of Mary in the Church of the Carmelites and the sculptures on the façade of the Church of the Visitation. In 1729 he made a statue of St John of Nepomuk in Warsaw.

He was married to Marianna Magdalena of Fontana. His son, Jan Bogumił Plersch, became a portraitist and decorator at the court of Stanisław August Poniatowski.
