Biography:

Jan Zbigniew Bem (1917-2018). A year before the outbreak of the Second World War, he began his studies at the Faculty of Architecture of the Lviv Polytechnic. During his studies he also developed his artistic interests, especially acting and singing. He was an active member of an amateur theatre troupe operating under the auspices of the Labour Society of the Land of Czerwien, whose aim was to popularise Polish culture among both Poles and national minorities. It was at this time that thoughts began to germinate about possibly changing his major to acting or music. When he arrived at Melchnau, he created his first symbolic work for the inernated - a well depicting Miss Huber, a teacher from Melchnau, giving a jug of water to a tormented Polish soldier. Other works by the artist include a hand-forged guttergraph with an image of Our Lady of the Dawn Gate, which was placed in the chapel dedicated to the memory of the fallen soldiers of the 2nd Foot Rifle Division at the cemetery in Zuchwil near Solura, and a commemorative medal in memory of the interned soldiers. Until the end of the war, Zbigniew Bem remained interned in the academic camp at Wintertuhr. For the former student of the Lviv Polytechnic, the opportunity to continue his studies at the renowned ETH Federal Technical School in Zurich opened up. He graduated from this university in 1944, earning a diploma in architecture. After the end of the war, he remained in Switzerland, continuing to practise his profession. Initially, he worked for various architectural firms before later acting independently. At the same time, he became actively involved in the life of the Polish emigration. He served as president of the Polish Society in Zurich for many years and was an active member of the Circle of Former Soldiers of the 2nd Foot Rifle Division.
