Biography:

Joachim Roch Hempel (c. 1744-1810), architect and builder. He initially served in the army as adjutant to the Lithuanian field hetman Józef Sosnowski, but from the 1770s he devoted himself to architecture, working for the Czartoryski family. He rebuilt the residence of Aleksandra Czartoryska in Siedlce (1783) and managed the expansion and modernisation of the palace complex in Puławy. He was the author of the design for the late Baroque church in Magnuszewo (1786-1787), and the probable designer of the church in Fajsławice.

Hempel was also involved in building theory. He wrote treatises, including 'On the way of building from beaten earth' (1803), and translated foreign publications such as 'On the building of brick kilns' (1804).

He was married twice. After being widowed in 1786, he married Zuzanna Hoffman, with whom he had twelve children, including Joachim (1787-1874), a cavalry officer and justice of the peace of the Łków district. He died on 26 February 1810 in Puławy.
