Chapel of the Chorzewski family

A chapel in the lower terrace of the chapel row, partly recessed into the slope of the upper terrace. The chapel is of approximately square ground plan, brick, plastered and reminiscent of classicist forms. It probably has Klein ceilings (a similar solution is used in the neighbouring chapels). It is covered by a low tented roof probably of reinforced concrete. The façade sits on a low plinth, with a central risalitic part and narrow side parts. The risalitic part is framed by smooth semi-columns with heads referring to the Ionic order and entablature with a triglyph-metopic frieze (consisting of only three triglyphs - two above the semi-columns and one on the axis). The columns are placed directly on the projecting faults of the plinth. Side and rear elevations framed by a simplified beam, with a plain frieze. Aedicula portal - framed by pilasters, closed with triangular pediment. The entrance opening is rectangular with a panel above it, closed with a full arch, in which a marble tablet with an engraved inscription GRÓB / FAMILY / CHORZEWSKICH //. The opening and the panel above it were originally covered with a profiled band with a key, now preserved only in the upper part; the decoration of the keystone is not preserved. Triangular panels with rosettes in the arch axes. The façade is surmounted by a simple Latin cross in dark grey granite placed on a wall extending the full length of the risalit, with a slightly flowing top line. On the wall a decoration carved in marble, in the form of three intertwined laurel wreaths with ribbon. In the central one a relief isosceles cross superimposed on a square. At the intersection of the arms decorated with a circle, the corners of the arms with a flowing line, in the end caps. The interior inaccessible, by analogy with the neighbouring chapels, it may be presumed that there was an altar on the axis opposite the entrance, above which a rectangular niche. On the sides, shelves for coffins. A burial cellar under the floor.
Time of origin:
ca. 1910
History:
The chapel was built for the Chorzewski family. Hipolit Chorzewski was mentioned in Kiev at the end of the 19th century. A well-known Chorzewski family from Kiev was a January Uprising insurgent whose grandson was a military pilot, Kazimierz Chorzewski.
Comments on the state of preservation and visible restoration:
Poor state of preservation. Chapel with biological build-up, cracks in concrete, damp, crumbling, entrance opening re-bricked. No. 17 painted on the chapel in black paint.
