Conservation of a group of objects from the collection of the Polish Historical and Literary Society/Library in Paris

Information about the object:
Jan Nepomucen Lewicki (1795-1871), Polish engraver, painter and draughtsman, active in Paris, where he emigrated after the November Uprising because he was threatened with arrest for participating in the uprising.

The Polish Library in Paris is one of the oldest and richest in collections outside the country. It was founded in 1838 by Polish émigrés who came to France after the fall of the November Uprising. In 1839, the Historical and Literary Society took charge of the Library. The Library's collections are vast and almost unknown to the Polish public.

Completed works:
The project included the full conservation of a set of 84 lithographs by Jan Nepomucen Lewicki. The conservation included black-and-white and colour lithographs from the graphic album Les costumes du peuple polonais (71 items) and loose engravings from other albums (13 items). The engravings depict couples in historical folk and noble costumes from various regions of Poland, military uniforms, as well as folk customs and rituals. The lithographs are of high artistic value but cannot be exhibited due to their poor state of preservation.

Funding: Programme of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage "Protection of Cultural Heritage Abroad".
