Parish Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Uhnów - Roman Catholic parish church located in Uhnów, active until 1951. Currently in ruins.

History
The parish in Uhnów was established in 1470, and from the very beginning it was part of the Chelm diocese, then, after the partitions of Poland, in 1782 it was briefly included in the diocese of Przemyśl, and from 1787 it belonged to the Lviv archdiocese, where it remained until the end of its existence in 1951.

The first wooden church was built from the foundation of Zygmunt Radzanowski and burnt down by the Tatars in 1502. The next one was destroyed at the end of the 16th century and was replaced by a new wooden temple built in 1597 from the funds of Wawrzyniec Trzciński. Unfortunately, the church was destroyed by fire around 1607. The new building was completed in 1610, and it was built with funds from Fr Pawel Pajęczny, the parish priest of Uhno. This temple also served a short period of time, as it was destroyed during the Tartar invasion in 1621, and in 1623 the destruction was completed by fire. It is likely that after 1623 either a new church was built, which would have been the fifth on this site, or the church of 1610 was thoroughly renovated. It survived until 1680, when it burned down in a fire.

In view of such frequent destruction of subsequent Uhnów churches and frequent hostile invasions of Uhnów, the erection of a brick temple began, which was completed in 1695. The founders of the building were the castellan of Lubaczów, Krzysztof Dunin from Skrzynno and his wife Marianna from Zaborowo. Already the following year, the founder was buried in a special tomb near the main entrance. At that time, the furnishings consisted of three altars, and over the next several years their number gradually increased. In 1736, a new main altar was built and the former central altar was converted into a side altar dedicated to St Jude Thaddeus. Some of the side altars were replaced by new ones before the middle of the 18th century. A new brick bell tower, which replaced the earlier wooden one, was built in the second half of the 18th century.

The church in Uhnów did not escape contributions, which depleted its stock of liturgical equipment in 1787 and 1810. In the 19th century, the condition of the church gradually deteriorated, with the leaking roof in particular causing problems. At the end of that century, the church underwent a general overhaul, all furnishings were restored and the roof was covered with sheet metal. Further major changes took place in 1880, when the interior received neo-style paintings and coloured glass was inserted in the windows. In addition, the Lviv organmaster Žebrovskyi renovated the church organ in 1899.

The beginning of the 20th century brought changes to the church furnishings. In 1904, the then parish priest, Father Antoni Dwornicki, commissioned an altar dedicated to the Holy Family from the sculptor-architectonic workshop of Stanisław Majerski in Przemyśl. Further designs were prepared by Majerski ten years later (an unidentified oak altar, unfinished by the artist, a portal and door under the choir, the entrance door to the church), and in 1916 a design for a new pulpit and probably also a baptismal font case.

The church suffered damage during the First World War when, on 27 June 1915, German artillery shelling destroyed the tower helmets and roof, damaged cornices and gables. The damage was repaired on the initiative of the parish priest, and the technical design was prepared by Leopold Mazurek. On this occasion, the helmets of the towers were changed to resemble those of the church in Waresz.

Major renovation work was carried out on the church in the interwar period. During the plastering of the façade in 1922, the signature of mason Wojciech Lenartowicz was found, and in the following years the façade and all side elevations were renovated and a new interior polychrome was made.

The church in Uhnów did not suffer any damage during World War II, but as a result of attacks by Ukrainian Insurgent Army bands, the Catholic priests had to leave the town in 1946. After their return, the church continued to function until the correction of borders in 1951. At that time, the church equipment was evacuated, including the painting 'The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary' from the main altar to the Church of the Holy Cross in Zamość. At that time, church furnishings were evacuated, including the painting 'The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary' from the main altar to the Church of the Holy Cross in Zamość, the painting 'Our Lady of the Rosary' to the church in Przezwodów, and the painting 'St Anna Samotrzeć' to the church in Hucisko. The sculptures from the main altar went to Werchrata, and the figures from the side aisles to the church in Tarnoszyn. Much of the furnishings were transferred to Dynisk, where they were burnt down in a church fire in 1987. After the church was closed by the Soviet Ukrainian authorities, a furniture shop was set up in the building, which functioned until 1992. The church then fell into disrepair, with part of the vaults collapsing. Since 2008, preservation work has been carried out under the direction of the Office for the Protection of Monuments in Belz, financed from the budget of the Ukrainian Ministry of Regional Development and Construction.

Architecture and painting decoration of the church
. The church was built at the close of the street leading from the market square. It is built of brick, rectangular in plan, three-bay with a narrower and lower presbytery and sacristy on the axis. The interior has a wall and pillar system, with pairs of pilasters superimposed on the pillars supporting fragments of the beam, the vaults are of the cross-column type. Music choir built into the first bay on three arcades. Two-tower, two-storey façade surmounted by a triangular pediment. Below it, in the belt of the beam frieze, an inscription carved in wet plaster: "Extruxit Albertus Lenartowicz AD MDCXCV" ("Built by Wojciech Lenartowicz in the year of our Lord 1695"). The tiers of the towers are octagonal, covered with helmets. The roofs over the body and chancel are gabled, with a pent roof over the vestry.

Interior painting decoration on the vault in the form of a decorative grille, on the rainbow arch, on a blue background, a painted cross with golden rays. Pillars painted in green, the pilasters on them have red shafts. Between the pillars planes with decorative patterns. Music choir arcades decorated with floral tendrils.

Artistic issues
. Despite the signature of the mason Wojciech Lenartowicz preserved on the façade, the authorship of the Uhnovo church has been widely and thoroughly discussed by art historians. This discussion has been collected and organised in recent years by Michał Kurzej. Despite earlier proposals appearing in the literature to attribute the church in Uhnów (as well as, among others, in Warż) to the major of the Zamość fortress, engineer Jan Michał Link, there is no reason to disbelieve the signature on the façade. The author of the church in Uhnów is therefore the mason Wojciech Lenartowicz.
