Biography:

Leon Vilaincour (born Leon Juliusz Pauker, 1923-2016), painter, born in Kraków. At the beginning of the Second World War he emigrated to the United Kingdom, where he settled permanently in London. For many years he taught painting at the Chelsea School of Art and the Central School of Arts and Crafts (today's Central Saint Martins), where he met his wife, the artist Roberta Cameron Smith.

He produced mainly oil paintings and watercolours, and his style evolved over the decades, from figurative painting to intense abstraction and expressive use of colour. His works often feature motifs drawn from European history and culture - including the Napoleonic era, the culture of Viennese cafes and French music. Two of his paintings are in the Tate collection and four in the Arts Council collection. He exhibited at the Royal Academy in the 1970s and at the prestigious John Moores exhibition in Liverpool, where he won an award.
