Dąbrówka lock

Dąbrówka lock is one of the buildings, located in Belarus, shaping the Augustow Canal. It was built in 1829 by Jerzy Arnold. The idea for the canal originated during the reign of King Stanislaw August Poniatowski, but the construction was not decided until the ХIХ century in order to bypass Prussian customs chambers for the transit of grain to Gdansk during the Polish-Prussian Customs War.

The sluice was built of stone and brick. The base was lined with red bricks and the upper part with white bricks in the national colours. Between the wars, the canal first became a tourist attraction. At the Dąbrówka lock, the so-called "Festival of the Sea" was held every year with great flair. A prestigious tourist route ran along the Canal, providing excellent conditions for sailing and canoeing. Today, "Dąbrówka" is a water-park complex that attracts tourists interested in active leisure in Belarus. Every year in May, a folk art festival is held near the sluice.
