Mass graves of NKVD victims in Tuskulany park

In 1994, in the area of the neglected Tuskulany Park, on the occasion of archaeological work to search for the remains of the foundations of the castle complex, the remains of 593 people murdered by the NKVD in the prison on Ofiarna Street in 1944-1947 were found. In 1995, the remains of 113 people were found, and in 2003 a further 18 were exhumed. Thus, a total of 724 people have been exhumed so far. Available documents indicate that 767 people were murdered in the said prison, but the whereabouts of the remains of 43 victims are unknown. In addition to Home Army soldiers, mainly Lithuanian partisans, but also Red Army deserters, collaborators, participants in the murder of Jews and criminal offenders were buried here. According to Lithuanian data, the victims included 559 Lithuanians, 56 Russians, 52 Poles, 38 Germans, 32 Belarusians, 18 Latvians, 9 Ukrainians, 3 Jews, 1 Estonian, 1 Uzbek.

The Polish side received from the Lithuanian authorities a list, drawn up in Russian, of the names of 50 Poles resting in the graves at Tuskulanum. Among the identified Poles are soldiers of the Home Army from the Ejszyszki area.

The remains of 724 victims were found and buried - 717 metal urns were placed in 2004 in an underground columbarium, set up in the park, while the remains of 7 people were taken by relatives of the victims for burial in family graves.
