Biography:

Nicolas Chopin (1771-1844), born in Marainville-sur-Madon, the son of François Chopin, a wheelwright and syndic, and his first wife, Marguerite. In 1787, he arrived in Poland, where he worked in the tobacco factory of Adam Weydlich. After the Second Partition of Poland and the closure of the factory, he considered returning to France, but joined the Warsaw municipal militia, taking part in the Kościuszko Uprising. After the fall of the uprising, he became a tutor to the Łączyński family, where he taught, among others, Maria Walewska. In 1806 he married Tekla Justyna Krzyżanowska. In 1810 their son, Fryderyk Chopin, was born. Mikołaj worked as a French teacher in Warsaw. He died and was buried in the Powązki Cemetery in Warsaw. After World War II, his grave was moved to a new location in the same cemetery.
