Clara Bancroft's gravestone

A double sepulchral space filled in with a slab entered from the front by two stairs, flanked by square pedestals on which are tall vases, behind them pedestals on which are trough-shaped sarcophaguses along the tomb, at the head a tall stele with sides narrowing towards the top, with an aedicula in which is an unusually large carved figure of a woman in a half-turn, in a nineteenth-century dress with train, with bowed head covered with a voluminous draped shroud, holding in her hands a branch with rose blossoms, one of which has fallen at her feet; beneath the aedicula on a pseudo pedestal, the profile of a sarcophagus on legs with inscriptions and a relief coat of arms; above the aedicula on either side of it a low-relief garland of various leaves (e.g. oak, ivy, ivy, etc.) hangs. Above the aedicula on both sides there is a low-relief garland of various leaves (e.g. oak, ivy, maple) and flowers (e.g. poppy), the stele is surmounted by a cross on a base of lying volutes with open arms at the crossing of which there is a six-pointed star; on the back wall of the stele there is a low-relief coat of arms inscribed in a faceted medallion. Inscriptions: on the transverse side of the sarcophagus (1) and on the back of the high stele below the Tyszkiewicz coat of arms (2).

AMP MD div. 35, no. 104, no Cardin grille burials, the concession with this number was bought by La Duchesse Decres with dimensions 3.89x1.29 (5.02 m2) on 14 III 1830, conservator's register no. 45874. The same owner still had a chapel next door of about 30 m2.

2 coats of arms: 1. (szrafîrowany): in a field of gold a slant of blue, on which three sheaves of grain in a slant, above it three trefoil crosses 2,1, at the bottom 1,2. Above the shield a gilt (?) golden-blue veil, in the jewel between the eagle's wings a sheaf. The motto: "DAT DEUS INCREMENUM". (coat of arms of the Bancroft family ); [On the reverse of a tall stele above the inscription]; 2nd (engrailed): in a medallion in a field of blue between the horns of a crescent shoulder downwards a six-rayed star. Shield beneath a tent in two places bound, at the top a crown of 9 pearls, in a jewel three peacock feathers. Above the shield on a ribbon encircling it the motto: "[...]CE[.]SNT PER A[.]GUSTIAS" (the motto of the Tyszkiewicz family is "Nec Aspera Terrent").

Tombstone noted in Henri Auguste Jouin, La sculpture dans les cimetières de Paris p. 46: Bancroft (Clara E. Peabody widow of Eduard), of Boston Mass U. S. A., décédée le 3 septembre 1882 à l'âge de 52 ans. - Haut-relief en bronze (grandeur nature) représentant mistress Bancroft, en pied, debout, tenant un bouquet de fleurs. Signée: H. Chapu (41 div.).

Elisabeth Clara Peabody Bancroft b. 1826, Milford, New Hampshire, d. 3 September 1882, Paris, residence av. de l'Alma 71. daughter of Stephen Peabody and Jerusha Boller, wife of Edward Payson Bancroft (1823-1865, d. Naples), married 1845 (www.geni.com). Annuitant. (AdP AD Paris 8e no. 1505 of 1882). Buried on 6 September 1882 in Passy Cemetery, gen. no. 1707, annual no. 6092, death certificate in merostie no. 1505. On 28 May 1884, exhumed to Père-Lachaise Cemetery, buried in concession no. 129/1883, annual no. 3584. Husband, buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery (Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA), where the wife's memorial inscription is also on her tombstone. Their daughter, Clara Elizabeth Bancroft Tyszkiewicz, is also commemorated there.

Clara Elizabeth Bancroft, also known as Clara Elizabeth Tyszkiewicz-Lohojska, b. 1857 Wife of Benedict Henryk Tyszkiewicz (b. 11 December 1852, Niemież - d. 13 May 1935, Mentona), married in 1874 in Boston or Newton, MA. She died on 3 September 1883 in Chur (Coire), Switzerland, aged 26. She was buried at Red Court (her husband's residence). Children from the marriage: Benedict Jan Tyszkiewicz, Count Edward Tyszkiewicz-Łohojski, Countess Elżbieta Maria (Bessie) Tyszkiewicz-Łohojska (1882-1969), wife of Stanisław Witold Plater-Zyberka (1875-1911) (www.geni.com).

Henri-Michel-Antoine Chapu (1833-1891), French sculptor and medallist, his work adorned numerous buildings in Paris, e.g. the Hôtel de ville, Opéra Garnier, Palais de justice, gare du Nord. He made other tombstone sculptures; e.g. for Barbedienne, Ycaza, Dagout, Louis-Joseph-Ernest Picard , lawyer, MP, member of the Government of National Defence (d. 1877)j, sculpture "la Renommée" (Fame) on the tombstone of Juliette Prévost (19e div.) on the cm. Père Lachaise as well as the tombstone of Auguste Axenfeld on the cm. Montparnasse and Mgr Dupanloup (1886) in the Cathedral of Orléans and Mgr Augustin David in the Cathedral of Saint-Étienne in Saint-Brieuc.
