Daniel Zimmermann (born 8 March 1935 in Saint-Denis, died 5 December 2000 in Paris, 15th arrondissement) - French writer and publisher, son of an Alsatian émigré and a Polish Jewish woman. After the war his mother was a communist activist in France. Zimmermann took his surname after his mother's second husband. He began his career as a teacher of difficult children. He then obtained a doctorate in literature and worked as a teacher in Paris VII-Vincennes for almost twenty years. He began his literary activity in 1977, quickly gaining popularity and recognition among readers. From 1985 to 1992, he headed the magazine Nouvelles Nouvelles. His literary style made him one of the great writers of the late 20th century. Zimmermann died on 5 December 2000 in Paris.
