Marcel Mangel, also known as Marcel Marceau, was a French actor and mime, considered one of the greatest exponents of pantomime in history. He was born on 22 March 1923 in Strasbourg, Alsace, the son of Charles (Chaim) Mangel and Anne (Chany) Werzberg. His grandfather David Mangel, born in 1896 in Będzin, emigrated with his family to Alsace around 1912, when the region was part of Germany, and his father Chaim changed his name to Charles. Charles Mangel (1895-1944), a butcher, died in Auschwitz. Marcel's mother, Anne Chana Werzberg (1889-1978), was the daughter of Simon Jacques Werzberg (1858-1912) and Berthe Vogel (1856-1928). Marcel had an older brother Simon Mangel (1921-1993). He married three times. His first wife was Huguette Mallet (1925-2012), with whom he had two sons, Baptiste and Michel Mangel (born 1951). His second wife was Ella Jaroszewicz-Bartnowska (born 5 August 1938 in Kielce, Poland), a Polish-French artist - dancer, director, choreographer and teacher, who developed in France a sign language combining the art of pantomime with the science of choreography; they married in June 1966. His third wife was Anne Sicco (born 1959), with whom he had two daughters: Camille (born 1971) and Aurélia (born 1976). Marcel Marceau began his career after the Second World War, in which he was active in the resistance movement. His most recognisable creation was Bip, a clown with white make-up and a distinctive beret, which brought him international fame and contributed to the development of modern pantomime. He died on 22 September 2007 in Cahors and was buried in the Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris on 26 September 2007. Sources: Wikipedia, Geneanet (https://gw.geneanet.org/).
