Polish quarters in the Rákoskeresztú cemetery

In the centre of the Polish section of the Rákoskeresztú Cemetery in Budapest is a Polish war cemetery commemorating those who died during World War II. These include victims of the September campaign as well as those who were killed by the Nazis, particularly after they entered Budapest. The war cemetery is the subject of a study as part of the documentation of war cemeteries.

Alongside the war cemetery are 29 (as of May 2024) tombstones of Polish men and women, as well as a monument erected by the Civic Committee in memory of those who rested on Hungarian soil. These often include people who came to Hungary as war refugees but died later. The gravestones are usually simple, in the form of a cross and a concrete band, while more recent realisations are in the form of a stele and a slab. The inscriptions are in Polish or Polish-Hungarian.

One row of civilian plots is located on the northern side of the war cemetery, the others are located on the western and west-south sides of the plots. Among them, single Hungarian tombstones can be found. White and red flags are painted on the Polish gravestones.
