Polish war quarters

In September 1939, thousands of civilian and military refugees crossed the Polish-Hungarian border. Thanks to the favour of the Hungarian authorities and society, Poles found shelter and were cared for. The Hungarian Ministry of War took care of the military internees, while the Ministry of the Interior took care of the civilians. The number of Polish military internees in the initial period of exile is estimated at around 33,000 privates and officers, distributed in camps.

A camp for Polish refugees - soldiers and civilians - existed in Győr from September 1939 to October 1944. The soldiers were employed on farms and in industrial plants. A memento of the Polish soldiers' stay is a statue of the Virgin Mary in the Catholic Church with the inscription: "Queen of Peace pray for us/Hungarians - Polish soldiers 3.12.1943".

In the Újváros (municipal) cemetery in Győr there is a separate war quarter with 45 World War II graves, 34 of which are those of soldiers and officers of the Polish Army who died in the local hospital.

In 1978, the renovation of the cemetery was carried out by the workers of the United Industrial Construction "Budostal", employed on contracts in Hungary, in a so-called social act. In 2010. The Council for the Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites rebuilt the cemetery to give it a unified appearance: new grave crosses made of granite were placed and a central cross was set up, which was not there before. It bears the inscription in Polish and Hungarian: "To the Poles / who in the years / 1939-1945 / rested in eternal sleep / far from / their native land / Compatriots". The three original gravestones funded by the families of the deceased have been preserved, creating a small lapidarium next to the central cross.
