Polish graves in the Sewri Christian Cemetery

The Mumbai cemetery is the burial place of 9 Polish refugees from the USSR who died between 1944 and 1946, and one who died in 1952. Also buried here is Sergeant Mikolaj Pawlowski of the 1st Balloon Battalion of the Polish Army, who, having been released from a camp in the USSR, entered India on a transport with Polish children and died of typhoid fever in Mumbai (then Bombay). The Commonwealth War Graves Commission probably moved his remains in 1962, along with other remains of soldiers buried here, to the Mumbai Military Cemetery. He was commemorated there, while the original gravestone remains in Sewri Cemetery. The Polish graves were restored in 2001 by Mr Prakash Jain, a local businessman and vice-president of the Polish-Indian Friendship Society. Despite repairs carried out by the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in Mumbai between 2003 and 2007, the gravestones had deteriorated due to weathering. The necessary reconstruction of them was done by the Consulate with funds from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage in 2022.
