Biography:

Rafał Kalinowski, born Józef Kalinowski (1835–1907), born in Vilnius, son of Andrzej Kalinowski and Józefa (née Połońska), a clergyman, a Discalced Carmelite, an engineer and a participant in the January Uprising.

He graduated from the military engineering school in St Petersburg, worked on railway construction and served in the Russian army, from which he resigned after the outbreak of the uprising. For his pro-independence activities, he was sentenced to hard labour and exiled to Siberia, where he spent time in Usol and Irkutsk, amongst other places.

Upon his return from exile, he became the tutor to Prince August Czartoryski, and subsequently joined the Order of Discalced Carmelites. In 1991, he was canonised by John Paul II.
