Sambor City Hall

The town of Sambor was founded under Magdeburg Law by the voivode of Kraków, Spytko of Melsztyn, in 1390. At that time, the first wooden town hall was erected, although no description of this building has survived to the present day. It probably performed defensive functions. It burned down in 1498 and a new town hall was not immediately built. It was not until 1580 that a brick town hall was erected in the market square. It was a two-storey building with deep cellars and a low tower with a vestibule decorated with the town's coat of arms - a deer pierced by an arrow. The town hall was destroyed in a fire in 1637, and between 1638 and 1670 a new two-storey building with a tall clock tower was built in its place.

An image of the Virgin Mary, which had been donated by Father Valentine Dudkiewicz in 1660, was placed on the south wall of the tower. In 1877, the image was replaced by a copper casting, which was removed in 1939. In 1997, a plaster statue of the Virgin Mary was placed in its place. The Town Hall was rebuilt in 1844 and its current appearance dates from this period. The building has been the seat of Sambor's municipal authorities to this day.
