Biography:

Roman Kazimierz Wiesław Bocheński (1910-1940), born in Glinianka, son of Roman and Helena née Smykiewicz, swimmer and construction technician.

He graduated from the State Railway Technical School in Warsaw, gaining the title of road-building technician. In 1928, he joined the swimming section of the AZS Warsaw, quickly achieving success. In the same year, he obtained the first swimming class at Królewska Huta, and two years later he broke the Polish record in the 100 m freestyle (1:00:4), achieving the third best result in Europe.

Between 1929 and 1939 he repeatedly won Polish championship titles, both individually and in relays. He represented Poland at the 1936 Olympic Games, competing in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay. However, the team was disqualified after Joachim Karliczek's falsification.

Just before the outbreak of the Second World War, he took part in the Academic Games in Monaco. With the Polish team, he returned home via Italy, Yugoslavia and Romania. After the outbreak of war, he fought as a reserve officer. He was taken prisoner by the Soviets and was most probably murdered in the Starobielsk camp.
