Biography:

Ryszard Demel (1921-2023) - Polish stained-glass artist, painter, university lecturer and Polish activist. From 1952 he was a teacher at three secondary schools in Hastings, where he also set up his own stained-glass studio. He conducted innovative experiments with glass, light effects and refraction in mosaic compositions, dubbed 'refractive mosaics', which were considered a novelty by the English Pantry Office. After 10 years in Hasting, the artist moved to Padua, Italy, where he made 5 stained glass windows for the Cathedral (about 24 m²).
