Variants of the name:

Rzeźba „L’Hélice terrestre” autorstwa Jacquesa Warminskiego w Orbière

Natural or caves that have been excavated since prehistoric times are abundant in this part of the Loire region. The population still uses them today, for example, as food storage. In the Orbière wilderness, taking partial advantage of the natural relief, Warminski has created something like his own troglodyte village. Almost invisible on the surface, hidden in a hollow, Warminski's bizarre rock town is not noted in contemporary art or architectural history, although analogies can be found for it in the works of André Bloc, Jean Dubuffet and land art. It is sometimes interpreted in terms of 'art brut', although the author was not a primitive artist, as he received a degree in architecture. The above-ground and underground spaces are now open to the public and function as venues for exhibitions and concerts (primarily of alternative culture), but were originally intended by the author as a work of his personal expression, created in superhuman effort, while at the same time alluding to the local tradition, according to which "troglodyte" cellars, houses and villages were created and used in all eras, right up to the present day. Warminski (1946-1996), whose Polish parents were also artists, was born nearby, near Angers. Devoid of symbolic references, this realisation is not geared towards understanding its meaning, nor does it have any programme (the astronomical inspirations seem very general); rather, it is perceived bodily, walking along its spiral corridors and paths, squeezing through underground tunnels, exploring the carved walls in the dark.
